Windows 7 Certification or just Compatibility?

As an ISV looking to make an application compatible with Windows 7 there are a couple of choices, although one of them won’t be a choice for much longer as more and more customers switch from Windows XP to Windows 7 – it will be mandatory! Getting an application compatible with Windows 7 isn’t difficult and it shouldn’t take more than 2 days for the majority of applications – this is how long we allowed when running the Windows 7 application compatibility labs – most developers or testers were on their way home half way through the second day. Once compatible with Windows 7 ISV’s can sign up to the Greenlight site to receive a number of marketing benefits and also let Microsoft know they are compatible with Windows 7 – that way we’ll stop bugging you about compatibility :-) . Windows 7 Certification, also known as the Windows 7 Client Software Logo Program, is the next step after compatibility, but certification isn’t for everybody and there will be a cost associated with purchasing the certificates, but Microsoft does NOT charge for certification

Real-life benefits of using the Microsoft Dynamics Sure Step methodology…

In the past I’ve blogged a few times about various case studies that highlight how our C ustomers have benefited from implementing Microsoft Dynamics GP.  Today I wanted to take a slightly different approach and talk about a new case study that focuses on how a Partner has benefited from using the Microsoft Dynamics Sure Step methodology, in this case our Microsoft Dynamics Partner “ BMA Software .”  You can read the full case study here , so I’ll just pull out a few key points that resonated with me. BMA Software has taken a deep industry focus on wholesale durable-goods distributors, and wanted a way to help improve their implementation processes with the goal of delivering more satisfied customers and faster deployments. They turned to the Microsoft Dynamics Sure Step methodology, incorporated their own industry-focused processes into the methodology, and have found some amazing benefits along the way.  More satisfied customers: BMA cites the use of the Sure Step methodology as something their clients and prospects see tremendous value in, providing them a level of credibility that other competitors do not have

The Beauty/Danger of Checklists

I love checklists. They give you a set of steps to take and when to take them for your systems, and help you standardize processes and procedures. They help you stay consistent, and let you know when you should do something, even when you might not be aware that a particular step is required.

Elastic Cloud

I had the good fortune to attend a Black Marble event on cloud computing last week.   One of the things that Simon Davies (a friend and colleague at Microsoft) talked about was the future of Azure and the Microsoft cloud offerings.  At the start of his presentation Simon used two quotes to summarise Cloud computing: “A style of computing where SCALABLE and ELASTIC IT-enabled capabilities are provided as a service to external customers using Internet technologies.” Gartner, Inc. “Hype Cycle for Cloud Computing,” 2009, by Daryl Plummer et al, July 16, 2009 “A standardized IT capability, such as SOFTWARE , APP PLATFORM, OR INFRASTRUCTURE , delivered via Internet technologies in a pay-per-use and self-service way. “ “How To Message "Cloud" Offerings And Not Get Lost In The Fog,” Forrester Research, Inc., July 2009 What struck me most about these two was the term Elastic.  Most customer ‘cloud’ conversations I have focus on scale – ‘I want my application to be highly available and highly scaleable’   And of course companies offering cloud based solutions such as Azure rightly focus in on this area
