Using ‘sys.dm_os_wait_stats’ to measure SSIS Package Performance

Using ‘sys.dm_os_wait_stats’ to measure SSIS Package Performance Chris Skorlinski Microsoft SQL Server Escalation Services We worked with a customer the other day who had 2 SSIS packages running queries against SQL Server database. One SSIS package executed twice as fast on one SQL Server as it did on another SQL Server. While troubleshooting, we wanted to see if the longer run time was a SQL engine/query issue or a SSIS package execution issue.

Visual Studio Profiler in Virtual Environment

Visual Studio profiler usage on virtual machines was limited so far, as it didn’t support Sampling mode in such environment. I’m glad to note that in Visual Studio 2010 you can sample your applications inside of virtual machines. VMs could be created using either VPC, VMWare of Hyper-V technologies

‘cacheRolesInCookie’ does not work with custom role providers

Earlier also I had heard and experienced that cacheRolesInCookie did not use to work with SharePoint 2007. When I was going through the fixes released in Service Pack 1 for SharePoint 2007 , there was a mention of how it resolves the issue and actually cache the roles in a cookie and saves us a roundtrip to the data store. But interestingly, when I created a custom provider and tried to reduce the DB calls, thought of using cacheRolesInCookie property, but sadly, it did not work as expected

Federal Government Embraces Cloud Computing; Outlines Long-term Cloud Computing Strategy

In a press event on Tuesday at NASA Ames Research Center in California, Federal Chief Information Officer (CIO) Vivek Kundra unveiled apps.gov, an online storefront for federal agencies to browse and purchase cloud-based IT services. The Obama administration has long touted cloud computing as an effective means to take advantage of technology for less money, and promises this first project should streamline IT costs, while also demonstrating a strong commitment to embracing innovation to tackle increasingly complex IT issues.   We at Microsoft are very excited about this announcement and what it means for the public sector AND the role of cloud computing  in the overall technology industry.

Percentages from the last "bug bash"

We had a ” bug bash ” on some sync features in OneNote last week.  I thought it may be interesting to look at the resolution of the bugs we found since I mentioned that some of the bugs reported in these situations may duplicates of each other and things like that.  (Please don’t read too much into this.  These stats are merely the result from one single test effort over the course of 2 days of testing and may not be indicative of any other statistics from other teams.)  After the two days of testing, we had 14 reported bugs.  4 of them – 28% – have already been closed.  We had an inconsistent server configuration and that led to some noise when we first started.  Once we investigated the server, we figured out we had not set it up correctly, but by then these bugs had already been entered.  Obviously, we need to get setup working (and we will!) and we simply got these bugs off our radar.  One bug was resolved as a duplicate to a pre-existing bug.  That’s 7%,albeit only a single bug report
