Some think certifications are just revenue generating schemes created by companies to push more of their product. Others think no certification in the world can replace years of experience “in the trenches” business acumen. While both of these psychologies have merit in some cases, most often than none, companies who institute certifications do so to raise awareness of the level of technical prowess needed to obtain such a certification

Happy new year. Over the last several months since //BUILD/, I’ve published multiple blog posts outlining advancements made in Visual Studio 11, from languages to the .NET Framework to IDE productivity to platform-specific tooling .  I’m concluding this five-post series with a look at some of the work that’s gone into making Visual Studio 11 a premier system for Application Lifecycle Management (ALM).  Since many of these features were first announced at TechEd North America 2011, many individuals from my division have spoken and blogged quite eloquently about the new capabilities, so I’ll use this opportunity simply to highlight a few of these new features and to point you to the other resources they’ve created to describe them in more depth. The ALM offering in Visual Studio 11 was designed to enable improved collaboration amongst team members, accelerate the adoption of agile processes, and improve the cycle that links development and operations.  I’ll take a look at a few examples of how Visual Studio 11 achieves this

Issue:  Installation of Silverlight fails with a generic error 1603 “installation failed” after the installation progress shows 99% complete. Cause: To find the root cause open the SilverlightMSI.log from the %temp% folder and it shows an error “Cannot create HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMozillaPlugins@Microsoft.com/NpCtrl,version=1.0”. This is because a MacAfee ‘Access Protection rule’ has been set on ‘Mozilla & FireFox files and settings’ which blocks Silverlight installer from creating the registry key.

Live shows are always a tricky thing. On the one hand, they are great as they allow you to interact with the show, ask questions, give your opinions, etc. On the other hand, they are trickier from a technical perspective and many things can go wrong, as was the case last Wednesday when this episode was originally scheduled to air.

I’ve been working on a validation framework for Dynamics CRM 2011.  I’ve published the first cut of the code.  It’s a little rough still, but I’ve been promising the sample to a few customers so I wanted to get the first working version out there.  Right now, it only supports regular expression validation.  However, if you read the home page, you will see how you can get involved in shaping the future of the sample.
