iTunes 8.2.1 Released, Rains on Palm Pre’s Parade

It appeared to be just another innocuous third-decimal-point minor update, but today’s release of iTunes 8.2.1 carried more than the usual “bug fixes and stability improvements.” (Those are still there, too.) For owners of the recently introduced Palm Pre unfortunate enough to have already downloaded and installed the update, it also ends the iTunes playlist syncing party. It was inevitable , since Apple clearly regards iTunes syncing as the exclusive, sacred territory of its own devices, but it probably still has a few Pre owners trying to turn back the clock

Local messaging in SL 3 is nice, but…

Why is there no inherent serialization support for normal object graphs like in the attached example. The attached example is a basic page with two simple vector caclulators. Entering a vector dimension of three in the part named “Add”, filling out a few values, press calculate, you get:  Press “Send arguments” and the arguments are send to the other app.

MSDTC transaction statistics show a large number of aggregated “Unknown” and “Total” transactions when viewed from a remote machine

Take the scenario whereby MSDTC is configured on Server A and allows remote administration. This means on server B you will be able to add Server A as a remote machine within the component services management snap-in. Once added you will be able to make administrative changes to the MSDTC on Server A from Server B, however it also means that you will be able to view the transaction lists and statistics for the MSDTC on Server A from Server B

The Truth About Software Keyboards

Harry McCracken at Technologizer wrote a nice piece about the virtues of hardware keyboards on smartphones. I think one reason a keyboard argument even exists is because when competing in a given market, you have to tag a competitor’s hot product with a “missing feature,” and then provide that feature. (How many manufacturers claimed FM radio and replaceable batteries were glaring omissions from the iPod, only to find adding it to their devices made no difference?) I think the Palm Pre — mentioned in the article — has a hardware keyboard partially to trumpet having something the iPhone lacks (and partially because it’s easier to implement than a software one).

RunningJobContext.IsClientConnected

I’ve seen a few people get confused over what this error message in the Reporting Services log file indicates. This message is generated when the Reporting Services web server detects that an HTTP request has experienced a remote disconnect.  In practice, this means that we queried the property HttpResponse.IsClientConnected and it returned false. So how does this work exactly, and are all requests subject to this kind of check?

Buffer, downtime, and productivity

Maybe it’s because I’ve been swamped this week while the sun’s been shining here in the beautiful Pacific Northwest, but I’ve been doing some thinking about buffer, downtime, and productivity. I don’t think it’s a secret that projects have a tendency to come in late sometimes
