iPod Nano Gains Camera, Microphone and Speaker, Larger Screen

So it seems like case manufacturers were only half right when it came to their designs for new iPods. The iPod touch didn’t get a camera at today’s special “Rock and Roll” Apple event, but the iPod nano did. Not only that, but it also got a built-in mic and speaker, which makes sense when you consider that people will be using it to record video

Apple Issues Developer Updates for iPhone 3.1, Snow Leopard Preview

Yesterday evening was a red-letter night for Apple developers, especially if you happened to have both Mac and iPhone developer accounts. That’s because Apple dropped new builds of both iPhone OS 3.1 and Snow Leopard, bringing it to version 10A411. Users with an iPhone developer account can head to Apple’s Developer Connection web site and get iPhone 3.1 Beta 2 and its attendant SDK in the usual way, while Snow Leopard users should find the new build available when they open up Software Update

Firefox 3.5 Released

You may already be running Firefox 3.5, if you grabbed it early from Mozilla’s FTP servers, where it’s been available for a little while now, but if not, head over to Mozilla.com to update. I’ve been using the Beta and the Release Candidate versions for some time, and aside from the usual incompatibility with a few add-ons, I can tell you that 3.5 not only works great, but also packs some useful new features.

RunningJobContext.IsClientConnected

I’ve seen a few people get confused over what this error message in the Reporting Services log file indicates. This message is generated when the Reporting Services web server detects that an HTTP request has experienced a remote disconnect.  In practice, this means that we queried the property HttpResponse.IsClientConnected and it returned false. So how does this work exactly, and are all requests subject to this kind of check?

Intro to Data View Web Part by Laura Rogers

Laura Rogers has posted some great screencasts to introduce you to the Data View Web Part , showing how easy it is use SharePoint Designer to consume data from a data source and provide a UI to insert, update, and delete items… all with no code.  Check out the bottom section of her article that points to more articles in this series.  I’ve got to admit, I am a developer who approaches SharePoint by looking for the things that I can extend using Visual Studio.  What I have found is that many of the things that I want to build I could instead create using tools like Access, Excel, SharePoint Designer, and InfoPath.  The lesson here is to spend the time researching what SharePoint provides out of the box (it’s quite a large surface area) to see if that is already implemented for you. A great example of this is building custom web parts.  I can’t tell you how many times I have created a web part with an SPGridView in it that does exactly what Laura shows in her screencast.  Using the out of box functionality not only empowers end users, but also greatly reduces the amount of code that you need to maintain.

Automating config file changes : Part 2 – modifying already existing config keys

This post contains the Powershell script to modify already existing config key values in a config file. A sample web.config file is given below <?xml version=”1.0″?> <configuration>   <system.web>     <customErrors mode=”On” defaultRedirect=”Error.htm”>       <error statusCode=”404″ redirect=”http://myAppDevWeb/404.aspx”/>     </customErrors>   </system.web>   <appSettings>     <add key=”DBServer” value=”myAppDevDB”/>   </appSettings> </configuration> We want to modify the 404 redirect page address and DBServer by passing the required values to the Powershell script.
