The best feature of Windows 7

I know this isn’t specifically educational, but I just feel the need to share. Having been using Windows 7 for a few weeks, the one feature that just knocks my socks off (and seems so obvious in hindsight) is the way that I can easily split my screen to show two different programmes at the same time. Basically, you grab the title bar of the window – like this: And then move it over to the left hand or right hand side of the screen.

VSS to TFS Field Notes

Today I was in New Jersey converting a VSS Database to TFS 2008.  I came across a couple of very interesting issues. The VSS database was first of all around 44Gb.  A bit on the large size for VSS.  The VSS database was at least 5 years old and has been previously upgraded to VSS version 6.0.  Not sure of what versions the VSS database had gone through.  Anyway the first issue I ran into was that I could not get past the VSSConvert Analyze step.  The VSSConvert utility keeps telling me that the VSS is not 6.0, and for sure it is.  I even ran the VSS Utility DDConv as a precaution to make sure.  The error I kept receiving was: TF60008:  The VSS database version is older than 6.0. The VSS converter only supports database versions 6.0 or above.

Understanding the error “An operation on a socket could not be performed because the system lacked sufficient buffer space or because a queue was…

This error message, which is associated with the Winsock error WSAENOBUFS and actually comes from Windows rather than SQL Server directly, has two well-understood root causes. However, it still stumps people today, probably because   there is no single source which explains both root causes and offers solutions for both. Here is a description of the two common situations where you may see this error and quick solutions for each: OS runs out of memory for TCP buffers When a powerful client machine, especially one with lots of RAM, is running an x86 version of Windows, people use the /PAE switch in the c:boot.ini file to allow applications on that machine to be able to address the full range of memory.

How do you find out what version of SharePoint or Project Server 2007 you are running?

The first approach is to open a web browser and got to the site settings page   (Site Actions > Site Settings > Modify All Settings).   The second approach is against the databases.
