Windows CE Powertoy: Diskprep

Kurt Kennett has just released a new PowerToy to MSDN Code Gallery – the Powertoy is called DiskPrep – the tool can be used to create bootable media and transfer a Windows CE o/s image to the media – this could be something like USB Key, or even a .VHD file (really useful for demos) – creating a stand-alone VHD from a CE 6.0 NK.BIN file can be completed in just a few clicks. CE 6.0 tools on 64-bit Windows

The CE 6.0 development tools are designed/tested on 32-bit Windows (Windows XP, Windows Vista) – I’ve been using the CE 6.0 development tools on 32-bit Windows 7 for some time without any issues.

Handling connection notification between a desktop machine and Windows CE based devices

Introduction: There are two ways that a desktop application can get notification when a Windows CE-based device gets connected with the desktop application. Registry based notification:           Registry based notification has two predefined events, AutoStartOnConnect and AutoStartOnDisconnect, each of which has its own Registry key.

SPARK contest finalists named (watch the videos)

The finalists for the SPARK contest have been named – this from the SPARK contest web site . Listed in alphabetical order: Doug Conn, aka ‘CogswellCogs,’ – “The Smart Pill” : An intelligent medication dispenser that combines disparate technologies into a machine that recognizes a patient’s medications, understands the pharmaceutical information, and helps the user take the correct medication at the right time. Jason Hershkowitz, aka ‘JHershkowitz,’ – “Home Brain System (HBS)” : A central nervous system that manages network-enabled devices in the home, allowing them to function together based on the occupants’ wants and needs.

It looks like Kurt’s video providing an overview of KITL was very useful to a number of you, and I’m sure there are a number of topics you would like to learn more about for Windows Embedded Standard or Windows CE. Perhaps learning about the startup sequence of Windows CE, or the build system and different build options, or building a Windows Embedded Standard component, shell replacement, remote debugging, writing and deploying managed applications to a Windows CE device, and more ! Drop me a comment and I will ping the appropriate people in the dev team to go generate the content
