Why take computer science? Save lives and the world

Alfred Thompson has written a series of good articles about programming, and why to take the classes, etc. But where is computer science being developed and refined to really save lives?  Chapel Hill held a 2 day conference titled: Microsoft Biology Foundation Workshop 2011.  This covered the open source tools for biological investigation and analysis.  For the conference syllabus see: http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/events/mbf2011-chapelhill/ The basis for this conference is the Microsoft Biology Foundation at http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/projects/bio/mbf.aspx , here you will find a bunch of stuff that I definitely will be blogging about in the future.
